Teaching our Daughter to Think Before Making a Decision

You definitely realize what your parents went through when you were a child once you have your own. I see why they didn’t like the fighting, the nagging, arguing, and all those other things because it just about drives you nuts.
I was able to experience something interesting as a parent recently and I thought that I would share it with you. You see, my sixteen year old daughter (Jessica) has somehow developed an interest in Tattoos. Whereas most parents would have just said “No!”, we have decided to take a different approach – we are making her think about it for a month before she is allowed to get one.
The reason for our approach is simple – we want her to understand the value in taking time to make decisions. Ideally, we want to get her away from making spur of the moment decisions that can be very costly in her adult life and we figure now is the perfect time to teach her.
So far, the experience has been very interesting. The first time that we talked about it, she wanted to get butterfly tattoos on each of her legs. Just two days later, she was thinking that fairy tattoos were the next best thing.
It will be interesting to see what she eventually decides to do after the month is up. Whether or not she does indeed get a tattoo, I think that it will be a valuable lesson for her.
