How Much Bedroom Furniture Do You Need?

cluttered-bedroomWhen my roommate and I first moved in together, I was shocked by how much stuff she had in her bedroom. Likewise, she was shocked at how little bedroom furniture I had (since all I had at the time was a queen bed without a frame!) After living together for awhile, we both adopted some of each other’s strategies for decorating a bedroom and we both ended up with rooms that were more moderate than what they’d started out as.

For me, it was a lesson in learning that there were some types of bedroom furniture that really made life more convenient. For example, I realized that it would be nice to have a bedside table with a lamp on it so that I didn’t need to get up to turn out the light when I was done reading each night. I also learned that it was nice to have a chest to store bedding in when it wasn’t being used.

In contrast, my roommate learned the value of using only what you need. When she moved in, she had a dresser and an armoire and she also used the closet! She eventually scaled down to a smaller dresser and got rid of the armoire entirely. Now we have rooms that have exactly the furniture that we need without a bunch of extras.
