Explaining Bail Bonds to my Kids

Even though I have been a parent for six years now, I am always amazed at what they can come up with. Everything from their unique perspective on the world around them, to the questions that they come up with, there really never seems to be a dull moment.
A great example of this happened just last night. I had the kids up late watching a movie on television when an ad for bail bonds in Salinas came up during the commercial break. The kids watched it quietly, and then they had about a million questions.
As it turned out, they just wanted to explain what a bail bond was. Now, I don’t know about you, but have you ever tried to explain something like that to a six and three year old? I really had to think hard about that one.
The best I could do was to tell them it was like borrowing books from the library. The library card was like the bail bond - the library lets them borrow the book for a set amount of time, but if they don’t bring it back, then they have to pay lots of money in late fees (in terms of money value for my kids).
I was worried that I had lost them, but after a moment, it seemed to click with them - hopefully the next time they have questions, it will be a little easier.
