A Big Hand Kicks Off a Great Night

“Straight flush with a six-low.” That started off what turned out to be a very interesting night in my home game the other night. My game is usually frequented by a disability insurance salesman, a doctor, a dentist, and a lawyer. The game of choice is Stud 8 or Better.
Each player is linked at the hip with each other. The doctor purchases his physician disability insurance from the salesman. The dentist gets his dentist disability insurance from the salesman. Does the lawyer own occupation disability insurance as well? Yes, and it’s from the salesman.
The lawyer and the salesman are bothers. The dentist married the salesman’s sister and the doctor is the father-in-law to the dentist. This of course makes the salesman and lawyer his sons.
What am I to these guys? I’m just the guy that hosts the game. I’m also the guy with the straight flush and six-low. That hand started off a run of cards that ended up with me winning about four times my buy-in. Of course, the money doesn’t hurt them as they are all successful in their careers. This in turn helps me in my career. They don’t know this, but I am a part-time professional poker player as well as a poker writer. They just think I am a freelance writer. Naturally, I am not going to brag too much about my ability. I like their money too much.
