A Writer’s Life

My brain is fried. I just finished doing a lot of research and writing on a company called Sierra Instruments. You probably haven’t heard of them (I hadn’t), but they make all kinds of mass flow meters, such as this ultrasonic water flowmeter. They’re a pretty interesting company — their products have been used in everything from NASA’s shuttles to health studies. Unfortunately, it’s also pretty scientific stuff, and right now if I hear the words "liquid flow calibrator" again I just might scream.
This is, I suppose, one of the hazards of a writer’s life. When you’re constantly doing a bazillion different projects for different clients, any time you have to concentrate really hard on one certain project you tend to get really burned out on it. Last summer, for example, I wrote test questions for high school students on the art of the Civil War. By the time I was finished with that project, I didn’t want to hear anything about art or photography or the Civil War for the rest of my life. Of course, that feeling passed quickly (especially since I love history), but you get the point!
Still, I wouldn’t give up freelance writing for anything. It’s my passion, and even if I get a little burned out now and then, it usually doesn’t last any longer than the time it takes to start the next project!
