Debt Was a Mistake for Me

I have had experience with both personal loans and student loans and have been working for what seems like just ages to try to pay both kinds off. But finally it looks like I have been able to do it, and I am definitely more than ready to just move on with my life now. No more living in this annoying debt that never really seems to go away, just sits there on my head like a dark cloud, waiting for yet another payment that needs to be made, yet another day that I am not truly free.
I will never make the mistake of getting into debt again, especially personal debt. Now I only live within my means and I think even if I were ever to go back to school like I might do in a few years to study psychology or something like that, I think that I would most likely work for a few years to save up the money in a cash account and pay for it that way. Loans are really annoying to have to pay back for years and years and I am done with it. From now on, I will only buy the things that I can afford on the spot.

Student loans are rough. I went to grad school and I had to get loans for both undergrad and grad. I graduated 10 years ago and I’m still paying off my student loans. I couldn’t have gone to college without loans though, so I guess that I shouldn’t complain about it.

I’m terrible at the not living above my means thing. I charge everything and I have three credit cards. I just pay the minimun each month and then charge them right up again. It’s so overwhelming that I feel that I’ll never get out of debt, so what it the point of trying.

I’m not sure how most people can go to college without loans. I mean, it’s not like you can save up a ton of money while you are going to high school! And I really don’t think it’s a good idea to work for a year after high school and then go to college. So many people end up not going to college that way!

Our society makes it pretty impossible not to have debt or loans of some type. Most people can’t just go out and pay cash for a car. No one that I know can pay cash for a home. I think that you just have to be smart about it.

I was a big believer in not using credit cards. My wife and I both had pretty good jobs. When she got pregnant, she was going to go back to work after the baby was born. Until we found out we were having triplets!!! My wife’s salary wouldn’t even cover day care for three babies. She stays at home with them. They are 6 months old and we have been putting stuff on the credit card since they were born. Diapers and formula for three babies is so expensive, we really don’t have a choice!!

It is a great feeling to be out of debt. It took me ten years but I finally did it too. Between the credit card and students loans, it took awhile. I do have a mortgage but I don’t think of that as a negative thing. Just not have credit card payments is pretty awesome!

I was lucky when it came to student loans. I got grants and assistantships so I didn’t have to get any. The credit card is what killed me. In grad school, I had a job, class, and internship and I was having trouble paying for rent and food. I have about three years worth of groceries on my credit card now. I’m not sure how I could have done things better though. A guy’s gotta eat!!
