Covering Up Pet Odors

I love my dog but after a soaking rain, I just want to give him up or send him to the kennel for a little break. No matter how much we dry him off after a walk, he still smells like wet dog and wet dog is not a pleasant odor. We’ve tried leaving him in the garage to dry off completely before letting him inside but his coat still carries the odor. Then, if he sits on any furniture or lies on the rugs, it takes on the doggy smell. We’ve tried various products from the pet store and short of steam cleaning the carpets after any rain or keeping the dog inside for 24 hours after a storm, we were at a loss.
The problem with pet odor is it soaks into the fabric of furniture and carpets. Eliminating odor from those fabrics is difficult but I found covering the smell by lighting scented jar candles works. We had participated in a charity walk and they were giving each participant a candle upon completing the walk. I hadn’t used the variety of candle before but one evening, I decided to light the new candle and I realized my dog didn’t smell quite so doggy when lying next to me on the couch. Next time we had rain, I burned my new candle and our house kept the odor of richly scented candles instead of wet dog.
