Deciding Between Degrees that Sound Complicated

Take a look at the brochures for almost any college and you may find yourself overwhelmed by the sheer number of different degrees that are now offered to students. As each general field has become more specialized, new degrees have popped up to satisfy the niche studies of each field. This can make things confusing for students who aren’t sure which degrees to pursue.

The good news is that most of the degrees that sound complicated aren’t actually that difficult to figure out once you break them down. For example, there are a lot of degrees that have a “specialty” or “emphasis” like the Master of Public Health with a Dental Emphasis. The name is long but it really just means that you’re getting a common degree (the public health degree) and your classes will focus on a specific area of that (dentistry).

It’s important to keep this in mind when trying to choose a degree. You’ll want to choose the broad degree first and then work your way down to the specific degree. Start with the area of study that interests you. Then figure out which aspect of it interests you. Then you can choose a degree that deals with that aspect. And finally you can determine if you want to add a specialty or emphasis.
