Jobs vs. Careers

People are getting laid off left and right these days. After a layoff, an individual has a few options. One is to take unemployment pay until new work in the same field can be found. Another is to work at a different type of job until the job market improves. People who don’t want to do this are typically people who have found their careers and who therefore don’t want to go back to just having a job. However, “just a job” can be a nice break sometimes if you have a positive attitude about it.
A lawyer friend of mine recently took on a job selling physician disability insurance through a local company. She didn’t ever picture herself spending her days discussing disability insurance quotes and yet she’s really enjoying the job. She doesn’t plan on doing it forever. She’d love to return to law in the future. But in the meantime, she’s found that learning about a new field and doing an entirely different type of work each day can provide something new and interesting for her life. That’s a lot better than just sitting at home and collecting an unemployment check while you hope for life to get better again!
