The first thing that you should do when you find out that you have any medical condition is to get educated about that condition. A lot of people simply take their doctors’ word regarding the basics about the conditions with which they are diagnosed. While your doctor is a great starting point for getting information about your health (especially if you ask a lot of questions) you shouldn’t stop learning about your health when you leave the doctor’s office.

The Internet is a great place to begin your research. Of course you have to take what you read online with a grain of salt but it’s a good starting place for learning about any health condition. If you’ve just been diagnosed with sleep apnea then you can use the Internet to learn from blogs, forums and medical journals about what this means for you.

You should go beyond this, though, by looking into classes in your area that are designed for people who have your condition. For example, your local hospital may offer a workshop that teaches you about the different bipap and CPAP machine types that there are for sleep apnea patients. Community colleges and non-profit health organizations also offer such classes. Be as educated about your own health as possible so that you can get the right treatment for any condition that you may have.

Sometimes I find it to be a lot of work being a college professor.  You see, I have been hired to work on my research of the human growth hormone and I am making leaps and bounds.  In fact, things have been going better than expected and I am impressed with the results.

Even though I am primarily at the college to do research, I am also required to teach as well.  So, this term I am teaching a number of medical courses that touch on my field of study and for the most part, it has been going very well.

But, I need to spend a lot of time preparing for lectures, and that is exactly what I have been doing for the last couple of hours.  Some days, it seems that I spend more time on preparing materials for the classes than my research, but it is a requirement of my tenure here.

I did have the bright idea just a couple of years ago to see if I could get out of teaching altogether, and I just about lost my job over the whole ordeal.  So, I guess I will just quit complaining about the whole thing and get this done – the sooner I am done, the sooner I can go home.

Christmas is coming up, and my brother-in-law is overseas.  He is an amateur photographer, so he has a really nice, professional grade digital camera and is constantly sending us pictures of the things he sees and does over there — such as the wild and crazy game of Buzkashi.

It’s difficult to decide what to buy someone overseas, but I think I’m going to look into getting my brother-in-law a nice camera case.  I know he’s worried about damaging it over there by accident, and I have heard a lot about how the sand gets into everything in the Middle East.  A good camera case seems like a good thing to get him.

It’s difficult to decide what to get someone who is overseas.  For one thing, you know there is probably quite a lot that they want or need, being so far from the comforts of home.  Shipping also makes gifts a challenge, because it is expensive, tends to take a long time, and there is always the risk of the package getting lost or damaged.

Other possible gifts I can think of are clothes, CDs, DVDs, and other items like that — things that provide at least some of the comforts of home.  Another thing we did for my brother-in-law was to send him a laptop when his quit working suddenly — since the Internet is his main form of communication with his family, it was an important and entirely practical gift.
